Punishment can include fines, community service, probation or even prison. If criminal charges are brought against you, it is your Sixth Amendment Right to have an attorney represent you. If you do not have the money for a lawyer, the Court will appoint you one through The Public Defender's Office. Civil Cases Civil cases involve conflicts between people or businesses. Examples of civil cases include family related matters (ex. divorce, child custody), lawsuits for money, landlord/tenant disputes, or when someone is trying to make another party do or stop doing something.
